Switzerland is yours to explore
With its breathtaking mountains, bustling cities and famously varied culture, Switzerland is the perfect destination if you want to combine outdoor adventure with urban excitement. The mighty Alps are snow-bound for much of the year, making them the ideal location for winter sports of all kinds. The Matterhorn and Dufour Peak on Monte Rosa are just two of the best-known mountains over 4, 000 m in height of which Switzerland has 48. The country is also a wonderful destination for summer holidays, thanks to its awe-inspiring landscape, countless lakes and fascinating cities such as Bern and Zurich.
Holiday tip for Bern
Having lost none of its charm over the centuries, the Swiss capital's magical, medieval old town has been a World Heritage Site since 1983. Its sights are all clustered together, making them easy to reach by foot, tram or bus.
Some of the most prominent are the Zytglogge-Turm or bell tower, the town hall and the Swiss parliament building, Bundesplatz square and Marzilibahn, Europe's shortest funicular line. Then there's the Einstein House: Albert Einstein lived and worked in Bern from 1903-1905 and developed his revolutionary theory of relativity here.
Holiday tip for Zurich
A lively, happening city built on a lake and within view of the Alps, Zurich offers tourists a heady mix of culture and lifestyle. It is home to over 50 museums and 100 galleries, but it also has a thriving nightlife scene. If you want a more active stay, you can use facilities built on the banks of the lake and river to go swimming right in the heart of the city, or you can hike up Uetliberg hill on the town's outskirts. The financial hub offers shopping opportunities galore. Bahnhofstrasse is famous for its upscale boutiques, expensive watches, exquisite food items and of course offices of world-famous Swiss banks.
