When travelling by train in Malaysia, it is easy to book your tickets and plan you whole trip by booking KTMB train tickets online direct from the KTMB website, or through an online agent selling tickets.
There are small extra admin fees to pay (and maybe credit / bank card fees from your bank) for using these services, so you will only pay a little more than you would by buying your tickets directly in person from the station.
On the plus side, it saves you the time and expense of travelling out to the station, so overall may work out cheaper.
Train tickets in Malaysia can be booked online up to 30 days in advance.
All Intercity Express trains and ETS Electric trains within Peninsular Malaysia can be booked online.
You can also book the KTMB train from Hat Yai in Thailand to KL online.
The only exception is the train 36 from Butterworth to Bangkok, which can only be booked from a station or the KTM office by the jetty in George Town, Penang. This is because this service is operated by SRT - the State Railways of Thailand.
Ticketing agents offers a cheaper and easier booking process than the KTMB E-Tickets site.
BusOnlineTicket offer a very easy to use booking platform, with a small admin fee added to the price of the ticket.
Please Note : From 1st July 2015, you will no longer be able to book Intercity Train tickets to / from Singapore, as all KTM Intercity trains will now be operating from / terminating at JB Sentral Station in Johor Bahru.
****Extra ETS Trains for the Chinese New Year period are now available!

The KTMB Website Train Booking Process
Once you land on the KTMB website you can just check fares or make a booking.
If it is your first time using the booking service you will have to create a new account first before you are allowed to buy your tickets.
It is quick and easy to set up an account and if you plan on using this service again, make sure you make a note of your user name and password.
Once you are in the booking system you simply select your departure station, then arrival station, date and then you are given a choice (if available) of the trains operating on that particular route. Select the train service you want and then the seating / berths options will appear for that particular train. Choose your seat / bed then continue with the rest of the booking formalities.
One thing to note is that stations are arranged in order of Malaysian States, so if you do not know which state a particular place is in, it may take you a little time to find it.
Popular destinations can be found under the following State (in bold) and Name:
